Sheldon Figueroa, 14, of Honolulu, practices blowing into a large conch shell over a foot long, called a pu or pu kani on Waikiki Beach during the sunset hours in Honolulu, Hawaii, Feb. 12, 2004. Ancient Hawaiians used the pu trumpet to accompany chants or call on ancestors for guidence. Today it is common to annouce the beginning of a cermony such as the Hawaii State Legislature, hula festivals or any other traditional ceremony such as a hawaiian wedding. The conch in the picture belongs to Daniel Salsedo who says he dreamed of the large shell trumpet before finding it and brings it to the beach to instruct young Hawaiians in culture and history.
